Christmas with the First Ladies: A Look into White House Tradition #NGFirstLadies

The holidays are a special time in our home. Not only do we believe in the holiday spirit… we live it. The season brings out a joy in us that we just cannot help but express.

My husband loves to give and give and give. He’s the first to mention decorations and starts making lists for things to give our children months in advance. The joy we experience as we watch our children enjoy the experience is more than enough for the effort we put into making the holidays perfect.

With my love of cooking and crafting, the holidays gives me the opportunity to try new things and creating things for my family and friends to enjoy.

When I first saw the cover of Christmas with the First ladies I knew it would be right up my alley. The holidays on a White House level? Heck yes! As I started reading this book I started to fall in love with the beauty and history of the way our country celebrates Christmas.

Christmas with the First Ladies

Christmas with the First Ladies allows the reader a look into the behind the scenes work that went into creating Christmas at the White House. With each First Lady came a different way to decorate and celebrate the holiday.

The book takes us through the history of each First Lady’s Christmas experience and what they did to make it their own. From the recipes they used, to the decorations the decided to grace the White House with, to how they celebrated with their family. This book covered everything we’d ever want to know about the White House Christmas.

White House History

As I started reading the book I realized just how interesting our history is. And by taking this sneak peek of how each Christmas was celebrated at the White House, from the Kennedys to the Obamas, I felt closer in a way to my American heritage.

With each new president comes more history to add to the books. I found it quite interesting how each decade brought on a new perspective to the holiday.

From the simplicity of certain years to the extravagant over-embellished decor of others, the times of the American people were evident in the way the First Ladies chose to celebrate the holidays.

Decorating Tips from the First Ladies

Perhaps my favorite part of the book was flipping through it as soon as I received it and admiring all of the gorgeous decorations.

Seriously… each Christmas tree was out done by the rest and put any decorations I’ve every put together to shame. The sheer massiveness of some of the trees used to decorate the White House were amazing.

My favorite tree, though, would have to be one of the most recent. The 2010 Official White House Blue Room Christmas tree (pictured below) was absolutely stunning.

Not only was it adorned with any different ornaments of all shapes and sizes, but it also came with a touching banner that stated, “Gift of American Spirit.” How fitting!

To say that I’m inspired by the First Ladies is an understatement. This year I seriously have to step up my game.

  1. What a cool book! I love history and watching one house be transformed every 4-8 years based on traditions of the family in it, is really interesting. I wonder if any of the first families took White House traditions to their own home after the presidential term was over?
